Non-Destructive Digging

NDD excavation that removes soil without mechanical cutting — the safer alternative to traditional digging when underground services may be present.

Overview

What is non-destructive digging?

Non-destructive digging (NDD) is the umbrella term for excavation methods that remove soil without using aggressive mechanical cutting tools. Our NDD excavation uses pressurised water and a vacuum to break up and lift the ground, leaving buried services intact and exposed for inspection.

NDD is the method contractors and utilities reach for when service plans are uncertain, when assets are known to be close to the surface, or when the cost of a strike — to safety, to schedule, or to a live network — is simply too high.

Common applications

  • Safe excavation in unknown or congested service areas
  • Pre-construction service proving and daylighting
  • Trenching where mechanical digging is restricted
  • Exposing assets for repair or connection
  • Investigative holes for geotech or service confirmation
  • Working in built-up or landscaped environments

Suitable project types

  • Civil and infrastructure projects
  • Utility maintenance and upgrades
  • Council and roads authority works
  • Telecommunications and power installations
  • Mining and industrial site maintenance
  • Agricultural infrastructure installation
How it works

The typical work process

  1. 1

    Identify risk

Review available service plans and identify the assets in the work zone.

  2. 2

    Select method

Confirm NDD as the appropriate method for the ground and asset conditions.

  3. 3

    Excavate safely

Water and vacuum remove soil without mechanical contact with services.

  4. 4

    Confirm & record

Exposed services are confirmed and documented before backfill.

Safety first

Safety and planning considerations

  • NDD is specified where a service strike is a realistic risk
  • Always combine NDD with current service plans and locates
  • Maintain exclusion zones and use spotters in live areas
  • Visually verify every exposed service before reinstating

Vacuum excavation reduces the risk of service strikes. It does not guarantee zero damage — accurate service plans and planning remain essential.
